James Cook University Indigenous Education & Research Centre
As part of the Townsville Space Rationalisation project the 300 series buildings were refurbished to accommodate the Indigenous Education and Research Centre (IERC) (relocating from buildings 030, 033 and 041) and the discipline of Arts and Creative Media (ACM) (consolidating and/or relocating from Buildings 300-303 and 027).
The work comprised alterations and additions to the existing Buildings 300-303 at James Cook University, Townsville Campus. This was a staged program which included the demolition of the current interior wall and office systems, including plasterboard, doors, linings, fittings and fixtures, glazing, ceilings, redundant services, floor coverings and some external wall or window sections; the fabrication and installation of new structural steel window heads, framing, column and bracing systems; the supply and installation of new mechanical, electrical, fire and security services – providing new up to date and compliant Australia and University standards; the construction of custom glazed partitions including Tasmanian oak timber framing, feature timber battens and acoustic ply paneling.
RCQ also provided all new fixed joinery and loose fitting workstation and office furniture, integrated audio and visual systems, new carpet and polished concrete floor surfacing; the construction of three external timber seating covered structures.
This was all undertaken on a tight timeframe of 12 weeks including Christmas shutdown as the University required the classrooms and teaching spaces ready and operational for the start of the lecturing semester and hence extension of time or delays were to be avoided at all costs.
RCQ worked closely with University representatives and the Superintendent to ensure matters were addressed quickly and sufficiently. Mechanical, Furniture and Audio Visual trade packages were awarded almost pre head contract to ensure long lead times could be delivered and installed in time to meet opening dates.
Conscious of construction noise and activities on adjacent lecture theatres and classrooms, RCQ implemented numerous trade activities over the holiday period to take advantage of nil student presence and keep work sequences going.
Some 18,490 working man hours were recorded with no lost time injuries.
This project was the winner of the 2018 North Queensland Master Builders Award for Refurbishment over $750K.
